Full-strength beer will not appear in grocery stores

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado lawmakers have rejected a proposal that would have allowed convenience stores, gas stations and grocery chains to sell full-strength beer.
The idea has failed several times in the past but Monday's debate was the first time the issue has reached the floor of the Legislature. House lawmakers debated the bill for more than 2 1/2 hours before voting against it.
Supporters of the bill argued that people should be able to buy full-strength beer wherever they want. Gas stations, grocery stores and convenience stores are currently only allowed to sell beer with 3.2 percent alcohol content. Colorado is among five states with such a rule.
Opponents of the legislation say it would have hurt smaller liquor stores which would have had to compete with larger grocery stores.
