COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It's been a busy few months for the Colorado Springs Police Department. Bank robberies are on the rise, and in the first four months of the year robbers have already hit 11 times. This year's bank robberies have surpassed Colorado Springs' 2010 total of nine.
"Whether or not we should be overly alarmed because we're headed in some extraordinary record, I'm not certain," Sgt. Steve Noblitt with the Colorado Springs Police Department said.
Of the 11 bank robbery cases, nine have been solved. Officers have arrested two suspects, 30-year-old Daryl Keener and 28-year-old Gary Cyprian. They are believed to be connected with eight bank robberies, including six in Colorado Springs.
For three months this duo hit the north side of town robbing banks. One would enter the bank, gun in hand, and give commands while his partner waited in a nearby getaway car.
Of the five city robberies the duo was not involved in, three have been solved with arrests. Two are still open including the April 5 robbery of ENT Federal Credit Union in the 2300 block of North Wahsatch, and the March 28 bank robbery at the American National Bank in the 3700 block of Briargate Boulevard.
"As long as times are going bad and people can't find a job, get six guys with no jobs and somebody's going to come up with something," Linnie Cade, a Colorado Springs resident, said.
Springs police said they have no doubt they will find their last two suspects. In the meantime, they want to make sure anyone ever involved in a robbery is trained to be a "good witness," which means get as many details as possible including voice, dialect, accent or tattoos.
