COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The YMCA has teamed up with MEND in the fight against childhood obesity.
Workshops are being offered to educate local children and their families to help them live healthier lifestyles.
What is MEND?
MEND is an independent non-profit foundation that runs the "MEND 7-13 Program" in collaboration with the YMCA and other community partners around the country.
The "MEND 7-13 Program" is an evidenced based and sustainable solution to the child obesity crisis.
"MEND is an acronym for - Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!", says MEND 7-13 Program Director of Corporate Relations. "We are reaching out especially to low-income and uninsured families in underserved parts of our community, whose child is above a healthy weight, in order to provide a opportunity for them to attend this potentially life-changing program at no cost to them."
Kovaly says MEND is a free, 10-week program where overweight children between ages 7 and 13 and their caregivers will learn how to develop and sustain healthy lifestyle behaviors.
There is a physical activity and an educational component.
What are the benefits of this program?
* Increased cardiovascular fitness
* On average 6 hours more physical activity per week for participants
* A reduction in "screen" time and sedentary behaviors by approximately 4 hours per week
* Marked improvements in body image and self-esteem
* Improved eating behaviors and greater understanding of nutrition
