COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs fire officials said the cause of the fire that displaced about 25 residents at Camelot Apartments Tuesday evening was caused by a room fan sitting on its cord.

The fan sparked an electrical fire, which spread to several units.  Crews took about 15 minutes to put the fire out.

The Pikes Peak Chapter of the American Red Cross sent a Disaster Action Team to the complex to assist the displaced residents. Dunmire Property Management provided lodging in a local hotel for all 25 residents. They also issued comfort kits with toiletry items, and provided food, clothing and medicine.

Residents will have the option to transfer to available apartments beginning Wednesday.

Update:

A two-alarm fire in the 4200 block of Airport Road near Murray Boulevard displaced about 30 people Tuesday afternoon.  The Colorado Springs Fire Department got a call for smoke around 5 p.m. at the Camelot Apartments, and by the time crews arrived, two apartments were heavily involved.

It took 15 minutes for crews to knock down the fire, and a total of 40 firefighters including three trucks and three engines were all on scene.   One firefighter was hurt and has minor injuries to the hand.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine a cause and location of the fire but don't want to speculate. Three apartments were damaged, two from heavy smoke and flames. The fire was so intense, the floor between the first and second levels of the apartment was completely burnt through.

With the wind moving at 21 mph, fire crews planned for the worst.

"Second alarm is very prudent precaution when the wind is blowing like [Tuesday]," Capt. Robert Coffey with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said. "Fire can start ripping through pretty quickly, so we want to have as many hands on scene as we can get."

No one was at home at the time of the fire. There are no civilian injuries.
