DENVER (AP) -- A proposal to make permits optional for carrying concealed weapons in Colorado has met its end.
A Democratic Senate committee voted 3-2 Tuesday against the measure, which would have made concealed-weapon permits optional for people legally able to carry them. The change would have saved gun owners from having to take safety lessons and undergo background checks before carrying concealed weapons.
The change passed the Republican House last month and has the support of many gun-rights advocates. But the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police and gun-control activists testified that most people would interpret the bill to mean anyone could carry concealed weapons, even those under 21 or others able to own guns but not carry concealed weapons.
Earlier this month, Wyoming became the fourth state to make concealed-carry permits optional.
