Mt. Tejon in downtown Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A downtown shop that's held a storefront in Colorado Springs for 10 years is closing its doors.
Jeanne Galvin, owner of Mt. Tejon, said she has seen a lot of stores come and go downtown over the years.
"It seems like when businesses leave, new ones come," Galvin said.
Now her store, a clothing and gift shop, is moving on as well.
"We're closing this location," Galvin said. "Number one, the economy has not been good, but i don't think Mt. Tejon ever had good branding. I think we just never found our place in the market."
Galvin said she's noticed fewer shoppers recently, and a big drop off in customers after Tejon Street was changed to a two way street.
"A lot of my customers quit coming down because of the two way traffic conversion on Tejon. It was too confusing for them, and when they're nervous about driving then they don't want to be here," Galvin said.
Galvin considers downtown a destination place.
"I think the more you have to offer people the better you will all do," Galvin said. "So the more stores, the more businessess that we have down here, whether they're clothing stores, or kitchen stores, they all draw people to downtown."
Despite several closed or closing storefronts, shoppers still strolled up and down the streets Sunday afternoon.
"We are checking out the scenery," Laurie Vaughan, a tourist from San Diego, said.
"I love it. It's quaint," David Searl, also a tourist from San Diego, said. "Not very much open on Sunday, so we're planning on coming back tomorrow to do a little more shopping."
"You're not gonna find I think what a lot of these people are looking for out on Powers," Andy, another shopper, said. "You're just not. You're not gonna find it at sprawlmart, you're not gonna find it at Walgreens."
But with more big box stores constantly moving into the area and the ability to shop online, it may be hard for downtown stores to survive.
"There's a number of places along here that were landmarks in terms of Colorado Springs history that are gone now," Andy said.
Galvin said she's planning on liquidating her inventory and hopes to close her doors for good at the end of May.
"We do have orders," Galvin said. "A lot of outstanding orders that will keep coming in through May, so hopefully by the end of May we can be finished. I'm looking forward to a long vacation, well deserved I think, and then depending on how our sale goes we'll see what's next. I like to keep my options open."
