COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) is investigating the death of at least three cats due to ether gas.
According to HSPPR officials, a man trapped and killed at least three cats at La Cresta Mobile Estates in Colorado Springs. Officials said the man was trapping cats at the mobile complex.
Colorado Springs police took the man into custody on aggravated animal cruelty charges.
Currently HSPPR is working to control the overpopulation of feral cats with a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program, which was launched more than a year ago has already spayed, neutered, and vaccinated 945 feral cats, including 27 from La Cresta Mobile Estates.
“The affects of cat overpopulation can be frustrating for many, but individuals who decide to take matters into their own hands will be charged with animal cruelty under state statute 18-9-202.,” HSPPR Director of Animal Services Joe Stafford said in a statement. “The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region has a TNR program to help control feral cat populations, but individuals should also be sterilizing their companion cats and keeping them indoors.”
