COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- An uncommon scene unfolded early Tuesday morning as Colorado Springs Firefighters were called to two fires at the same home. Investigators are digging into every possible cause, even using a Colorado Springs Police Department K-9 to track a scent.
The home in the 4200 block of Marlow Circle is a complete loss. Firefighters said the first fire was accidental and started Monday afternoon with a mattress that was lit on fire by a 4-year-old playing with a lighter.
"I'm just suspicious," neighbor Maura Fontini-Rodriguez. "Suddenly at 1 in the middle of the night [there's a fire] yes that seems suspicious, it seems strange since they took care of it yesterday afternoon."
Tuesday around 1 a.m., 12 hours later, fire crews were back, and the home was fully engulfed with flames shooting 10-12 feet high. The fire then spread to a neighbor's home and attacked the attic with heavy smoke damage.
The majority of the second fire was from the back of the home, but that's a different part of the house than the initial mattress fire.
Plus, there was a fire watch on the property. The last fire company stopped by at 8 p.m. and said there was no sign of fire.
"When somebody comes in and starts a second fire it makes you really wonder, 'What's going on?" Fontini-Rodriguez said.
The two fires have one neighbor so concerned for his safety he didn't want to divulge his name. He said he doesn't know what's going on, but he's keeping a close eye on his neighborhood and looking out for suspicious people.
Both families have been displaced and are being assisted by Red Cross.
