DENVER (AP) -- The Air Force has asked a retired general to assess the religious climate at the Air Force Academy, where allegations and court battles over religious tolerance have periodically flared in recent years.

The Air Force said Friday the review will be conducted by Patrick K. Gamble, who is now president of the University of Alaska.

Gamble will assess the academy's climate for free exercise of religion. The Air Force says the review isn't an investigation or inspection, and no detailed report is expected.

It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the review. However, an academy faculty member and a religious watchdog group unsuccessfully sued the academy in February, seeking to block a prayer luncheon on the grounds it violated the separation of church and state.

The review was first reported in the Colorado Springs Independent newspaper.
