COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Would you kill another dog to save your own? One Colorado Springs man did.
A man shot and killed a dog while walking his own Wednesday evening after his dog was attacked by the one he eventually shot, according to Colorado Springs police.
Police said the shooter was walking his greyhound in the 4800 block of El Camino Drive around 5:30 p.m.
Tammy Martinez was walking her late husband's dog Flato, a bullmastiff, on Wednesday when it ran toward the greyhound. Martinez said she lost hold of the leash, and Flato jumped on the greyhound. She said the greyhound's owner shouted at Martinez to get her dog away, tried to grab the leash, kicked Flato, then shot it twice.
Did the shooter have the right to do that? Martinez doesn't think so. She said her dog wasn't dangerous and didn't deserve to be shot.
Police said the shooter had a permit for the gun but did take a report for illegal discharge of a firearm. They said the greyhound's owner appeared to be within the guidelines of the law, but they are still conducting an investigation.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region also responded, and they will be conducting an investigation into possible animal cruelty charges.
Police said the shooter posed no danger to the public, and they did not make any arrests.
