PUEBLO, COLO. --

Pueblo police were responding to a loud noise disturbance around 11 p.m. Thursday night in the 2300 block of Longhorn Drive

The officer knocked on the door and 27-year-old Robert Daniel Elmore answered with a handgun.  According to witnesses, Elmore pointed the gun at the officer's face.

The officer fired two shots, hitting Elmore in the chest. He later died at Parkview Hospital.

"Last night we heard some shots, we came walked out and saw the cops running around all over the place," neighbor Raymond Higgs said.

Police are still trying to figure out why Elmore opened the door with a gun, but neighbors said he was moving out after having a heated conversation with his estranged wife.

She allegedly said 'a group of guys are coming to get you.'

Pueblo Police Capt. Dayton Robinson said they're looking into more details.

"We haven't been able to confirm it, so we're still working on that. She denies that, but we had heard that same thing, so we're looking into it," Robinson said.

Elmore has nine priors on his record including domestic violence, forgery and driving with a suspended license.

The police officer is on paid administrative leave per Pueblo Police Department policy. The officer should be back anywhere from the next few days to next few weeks after the district attorney has had a chance to review the case and make a judgment.

Original story:

One person is dead after a shooting that involved a Pueblo police officer early Friday morning.

It happened around 11 p.m. in the 2300 block of Longhorn Drive.

Pueblo police said they were responding to a call for a noise disturbance, and when they knocked on the door of the residence, 27-year-old Robert Elmore answered armed with a gun.

A Pueblo officer fired at least two shots at Elmore. He was taken to Parkview Hospital where he died.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave, which is department policy. Police will not release his name until after the investigation but did say he was uninjured.

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting.

This is the latest in a string of shooting deaths in the city this year. On Jan. 30, 22-year-old Carlos Lave was shot during a disturbance at a club.

At the beginning of January, a 16-year-old was arrested for shooting and killing another teen over a drug deal gone bad.
