COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Firefighters were busy Saturday night as lightning starts several grass fires. The largest of them broke out near Highway 94 close to Log and Hodge Roads.
Ellicott Firefighters said the lightning fire was 45 acres and spreading quickly. At one point, it was so large you could see the orange glow of the fire and billowing smoke while driving down Highway 94. High winds and a nearby home had firefighters concerned, so crews from Peyton, Ellicott, Falcon, Hanover, and the County Wildland Team were all on the scene.
Firefighters had a slow start to the fire because of its location.
"When we first looked at it we couldn't get immediate acess. It's prerty much square in the middle of pastures between Peyton and Log Road and South Highway 94," John Scorsine of the Ellicott Fire Department said.
Mother Nature and a sudden downpour of rain put the fire out, but this wasn't the only fire happening in the area. So, with the scene fully contained, crews were cleared and dispatched other fires in the area.
