DENVER (AP) -- School nutritionists in Colorado cheered after lawmakers in the state Senate backed off a plan to cut free breakfasts for poor students.
A Senate committee voted to restore the Start Smart Nutrition Program on Wednesday. Last month legislators signaled they'd cut about $124,000 needed to subsidize the breakfasts at the end of this school year. The cut would not have affected breakfasts next school year, but the proposed cut prompted widespread complaints that needy students are the wrong place to look for budget cuts.
A group of school nutritionists were watching Wednesday when the Senate changed course and restored the funding, a decision that still faces more votes before it's final. Advocates placed sample school breakfasts on senators' desks, and two senators read letters from schoolchildren.
