DENVER (AP) -- President Barack Obama is using a Colorado school as an example of what education reform can do.

In his State of the Union address Tuesday, Obama pointed to Bruce Randolph in Denver which he said went from being one of the worst schools in Colorado to graduating 97 percent of its seniors in three years. He said that's an example of what can happen when teachers, principals, school board and communities work together to improve schools.

The school was the first in Colorado to be given innovation status in which teachers agree to waive district and union rules.

Obama also mentioned the former principal who led the effort.

Kristin Waters told The Denver Post the school's story shows that children can be successful when the focus is on the right things.
