COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Knowing how to perform CPR correctly could mean the difference between life and death during a medical emergency.
The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region offers CPR classes to the community.
Kitty Farquharson, Aquatic Trainer/Head Guard at Garden Ranch Center YMCA was on FOX21 Morning News to demonstrate CPR and what she teaches during her class.
Why take CPR?
-The knowledge and skills you learn can help to save a life.
-Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States.
-In the United States alone approximately 330,000 people die annually from heart disease, out of those about 250,000 die before reaching the hospital.
-Good, quality CPR improves a victim’s chances of survival.
What is taught?
-Infant, child, and adult CPR with push hard, push fast, compressions. (This includes full chest recoil after each compression at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.)
-Infant, child, and adult rescue breathing.
-Infant, child, and adult conscious choking and unconscious choking.
-Use of a pocket mask, including cephalic, lateral, and suspected spinal modified jaw thrust.
-Use of Bag-valve-masks.
-Use of an AED
-Signs and symptoms of heart attack and stroke.
-Good Samaritan Law
When are the Garden Ranch YMCA courses?
-Courses are offered about twice a month at the GRC. Other Y’s also teach CPR.
-Also offer a recertification course once a month for current card holders.

-Wilderness and Remote First Aid certification
-Babysitting certification
-Along with our Y Lifeguard courses. (One coming up during spring break here at the GRC March 22-26).
