ENGLEWOOD, COLO. -- The Denver Broncos have hired former Carolina Panthers coach John Fox to be their new head coach.
Fox was hired Thursday to replace Josh McDaniels, who was fired mid-season in the midst of the worst stretch in franchise history. McDaniels started 6-0 in 2009 but finished just 2-8, then went 3-9 in 2010 before getting the boot. Mixed in was a videotaping scandal overseas.
Interim coach Eric Studesville went 1-3 in place of McDaniels.
Fox went 2-14 as head coach of the panthers this past season, his ninth with the team, and was fired. He took Carolina to three playoff appearances in that time, including a Super Bowl appearance.
Known as a 'defensive mind,' Fox is faced with the tall task of turning around a defense that ranked dead last in the NFL in yards per game this season. His Panthers ranked 18th.
Offensively, Fox will attempt to groom Tim Tebow, who is perceived by many to be the frontrunner for the starting quarterback job next season. Tebow went 1-2 in three starts as a Bronco in 2010.
