Erin Carroll from the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region stopped by FOX21 Morning News to introduce us to Roz, a 6-year-old longhaired cat with calico markings who is spayed and enjoys being petted and hanging out with people.
Her adoption fee is $48.
During the month of January, the Humane Society is offering free spay-neuter surgeries to income-qualified cat owners on a first-come, first-served basis. Carroll said space is limited.
“We are jump starting our new Subsidized Spay-Neuter Program by offering free sterilizations for cats,” she said. Funding is provided as a grant from the Animal Assistance Foundation.
The program was launched in November 2010 and it provides surgeries for dogs and cats for owners who might not be able to afford them on their own. Carroll said the co-pay for each owner will depend on income qualification, pet species, sex and weight of the animal.
In 2010, Carroll said the shelter took in more than 9,000 cats and 11,000 dogs from the Pikes Peak Region alone. Only 4 out of 10 cats and 8 out of 10 dogs are ever adopted.
