DENVER (AP) -- Colorado Republicans who vowed during political campaigns this year to reverse tough new oil and gas regulations are now backing off and taking a wait-and-see attitude. So is the industry.
Doug Flanders of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association says oil and gas companies are working on a few changes to the rules, but they now want stability.
Political consultant Floyd Ciruli says Republicans are reneging on campaign promises to change the rules because they don't have the votes. He says the best they can get is fair implementation of the rules.
The tougher rules that took effect last year were intended to give more weight to the environment, wildlife and public health and safety in permitting oil and gas wells.
