PUEBLO, COLO. -- A mother's family dropped off a newborn baby boy at a Pueblo fire station on Christmas Eve about 20 minutes after she gave birth to him.
Family members delivered the baby at the mother's home, then dropped it off at the mother's request.
The mother and baby were transported separately to a local hospital shortly after the drop off. Officials with the hospital aided the mother, while custody of the baby was transferred from her to authorities.
Officials said the baby was born healthy and was safe. The city of Pueblo instituted its Safe Haven for Newborns program several years ago. The program is set up so a citizen can surrender custody of a newborn safely at any fire station in the city. The city also encourages 911 calls so a medically challenged citizen doesn't have to drive.
The mother can legally surrender custody anonymously at any hospital or police station as well.
This is the first newborn to be surrendered since the program was established.
