LOVELAND, COLO. (AP) -- A man who started a wildfire that destroyed two homes in northern Colorado will help his neighbors rebuild as part of his sentence.

Joel Ledermann was sentenced to three years probation on Tuesday for accidentally starting the 740-acre fire. The Loveland Reporter-Herald says he will be required to perform 150 hours of community service each year, rebuilding the homes and restoring the burned land.

He also must pay $500 in restitution each month until the total damage, which hasn't been calculated yet, is paid for.

Prosecutor Josh Lehman didn't ask for time behind bars. Lehman says Ledermann's life lately has been worse than jail, noting that the blaze left a charred arrow pointing at his home. His neighbors agreed with the sentence.
