PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, COLO. (AP) -- The leader of the North American Aerospace Command and the U.S. Northern Command is marking the Pearl Harbor anniversary by saying the nation shouldn't forget the need for vigilance.

Adm. Sandy Winnefeld Jr. said in a blog entry Tuesday that information was available on Dec. 7, 1941, that could have indicated the Japanese attack was imminent.

He writes that "We don't like surprises here at NORAD" and the Northern Command.

NORAD is U.S.-Canada command that monitors the skies over both countries. Northcom oversees the U.S. military's homeland defense and supports civilian authorities.

Both are headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
