COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Tears and smiles, music and memories were plentiful at the Veterans' Ceremony Thursday, organized by the Pikes Peak Veteran Council for Veteran's Day.
The key guest speaker was Admiral James Winnefeld Jr., the Commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM. The Admiral said he was inspired growing up by his father, a Korean War officer.
"He was wounded in the Navy, and watching him as I grew up, he was a tremendous inspiration for me for his integrity, for his sense of service, and I hope to measure up one day to the service he did to our country," Winnefield said.
The Admiral said he wants to wish everyone a Happy Veterans Day and thank them for their service.
"This was a terrific ceremony that was brought together by a wonderful group of veterans to salute Canadians and Americans who've served for so many years. Both of our countries, and many of whom have given great sacrifices," Winnefield said.
He also mentioned the families of soldiers, who, he said, have had to make their own sacrifices, often being left in the dark about their loved ones' whereabouts.
