COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs police are investigating a hit and run crash that caused a gas leak Thursday morning.

Residents of a Colorado Springs apartment complex were briefly evacuated Thursday morning due to the leak.

Crews were called to Timbers Apartments in the 2800 Block of Airport Road. Around 5 a.m. fire officials said a car struck a gas meter, causing the gas leak. They said the leak is now under control.

Residents in a few nearby buildings were also evacuated but are now being allowed back in the building.

Westbound lanes of Airport Road were shut down between south Chelton and south Circle but are now reopen.
