DENVER (AP) -- The Army and the Veterans Affairs Department are announcing a new research project on suicide in the military.

A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday at the Denver VA Medical Center. No details have been released.

Officials from the Army, the VA and Florida State University will be present.

The Defense Department has been trying to reverse rising numbers of suicides. More than 1,100 servicemen and women killed themselves between 2005 and 2009, and the overall numbers are rising this year.

A report commissioned by Congress and released in August said the Pentagon should create a high-level office to establish strategy and coordinate suicide prevention efforts across the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force.
