COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex Sunday morning displaced several residents.

Three people had to be evacuated by ladder off their balconies.

Fire officials said the fire was confined to a single unit, but there's damage to other units.

It happened around 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Skyway Village Apartment in the 800 block of Oxford Lane.

"There was fire rolling out of the windows on the other side of the building and lapping up into the eaves," CSFD Lt. Kriss Soppe said.  "At that point there was real concern of the fire extending into the attic area and maybe running across the entire roof of the building."

He said no one was seriously injured.

"The entire building was evacuated, the ones that couldn't get out, we did a ladder rescue," Soppe said.  "Two adults and a child were brought down off a balcony, and the rest of the residents were able to walk out safely."

Loren Hellem said he woke up when someone started pounding on his door.

"Someone was yelling that there was an evacuation happening, so we got out of bed, got dressed, grabbed the cat," Hellem said.  "That was the most important thing, grabbing the kitty."

He had his cat, Kiki, in a portable carrying case.

"We have a fire plan, of course," Hellem said.  "You'd have to be an idiot not to have a fire plan.  I have money in case I need to rent a hotel room, an extra set of clothes and shoes in the car, everything I need in case of a fire, in case I need to make a quick move to a hotel."

He said he wasn't sure if he would be able to got back to his apartment or how bad the damage was to his building.

"I think if we have to find a new place, we'll find one.  Right now I'm just happy to get the cat out," he said.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.  A resident who called the fire in said a fuse had blown inside one of the apartments.
