PUEBLO, COLO. (AP) -- Inspections have turned up no zebra and quagga mussels on Colorado boats this year.
But state parks officials say there have been eight cases of the invasive critters found on boats coming from other states. More than 200,000 boats have been checked this year. Boats with standing water were decontaminated to ensure there were no mussels that could get into Colorado waters.
The mussels can clog water treatment plants and damage ecosystems. They're not native to this country and don't have natural enemies to keep them in check.
The mussels were first found in Colorado in 2007 in Lake Pueblo.
Parks officials tell The Pueblo Chieftain that more people are showing up at lakes with their boats cleaned, drained and dry.
