Police continue to investigate suspicious Craigslist postings

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Colorado Springs Police Department continues to investigate a Craigslist ad originally posted last week.
There was a second, similar post put up early Tuesday morning.
The first posting showed a picture of a newborn with the post that "a child will die if no one comes to get it." The ad stated the child would be put in a trash can in front of an apartment complex on University Drive.
Police searched the area but never found anything. The ad was quickly removed from the site.
"During the course of the investigation we were able to come up with an additional address to where it appeared the ad had been posted," Sgt. Billy Dehart of the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit said. "Officers went to that home, interviewed several people at that address and at that time didn't have enough information to indicate that the Craigslist posting came from there."
Police said the residents had an unsecure wireless connection.
Then, early Tuesday morning, another ad appeared on Craigslist. This one said an infant would be dropped off at the corner of Capulin and Saratoga in Pikes Peak Park.
Officers searched that area, and again nothing was found.
"I want to point out that we had numerous people in the Colorado Springs area who contacted us when they saw this posting, so I'm really glad citizens where alert and reached out to us as quickly as possible," Dehart said.
He said the Internet Crimes Against Children unit have issued several warrants - both for Craigslist and for Qwest, the Internet service provider that was used in the posting.
They're also trying to determine if the ad was placed from a computer or a smartphone.
"If a person is actively trying to get rid of a baby in this manner, there's several potential felony child abuse charges involved," Dehart said.
