SILVERTHORNE, COLO. -- The U.S. Forest Service will begin cutting down beetle-infested trees in the Silverthorne area.

Crews began cutting down the trees with chain saws Monday in the Dillon Ranger District and Forest Service officials say the work will continue indefinitely depending on firefighters' availability.

The tiny beetles that burrow under the bark of pine trees have killed more than 3.5 million acres of trees in Colorado and southeastern Wyoming.

The work is part of the White River National Forest Hazardous Tree Removal plan.
