PUEBLO, COLO. -- Pueblo County has shifted $124,000 in federal stimulus funds from a job training program to a program that provides weekend lunches for low-income students.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported Wednesday the job program was aimed at giving people enough training to apply for positions, then partially reimburse their new employers for their pay.

County officials say 240 people enrolled, but only about two dozen got jobs.

Officials say employers found the paper work burdensome, and too many people who wanted the training needed remedial education.

The original grant was $452,000.

The county stood to lose the unspent money if it wasn't committed to a program by Sept. 30, so it was shifted to the lunch program.
