DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- The search has been called off for a 41-year-old Durango man who vanished after flashing a knife at a Colorado Division of Wildlife officer.

Authorities say Kevin Haugen was last seen Aug. 27 on public lands near Durango.

He allegedly threatened suicide and told the officer he would not return to jail, then fled on foot and was not seen again.

Oddly, Haugen was not facing any charges and was not sought by police, The Durango Herald reported.

About 15 searchers looked for signs of Haugen, and search dogs and a helicopter were enlisted in the search.

The search was called off Saturday after eight days of searching turned up nothing.

Authorities say they are not sure Haugen is even in the area.
