COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It's been the perfect summer for baseball and the Colorado Sky Sox's attendance record is reflecting that.
Last Saturday more than 5,000 fans showed up for the game at Security Service Field, breaking the Sox's all time season attendance record.
The previous season attendance record was set in 2008 at 303,048 fans.
As of Friday this year’s attendance was sitting at a little over 309,000 fans and the number is still growing with more fans pouring into the stadium for the final home series of the season.
For Sky Sox fans there are lots of reasons to head out to the ballpark, but it seems this year even more so.
FOX21 asked fans at Friday’s game what brought them out to the game and got a variety of answers from the food to the fireworks to the love of the game.
FOX21 also spoke with Tony Ensor, President and General Manager of the Sky Sox, to find out why the team has been so popular this year in particular.
“The economy's been tough on people the last couple years,” said Ensor.
The Sox have been pulling big attendance numbers all season long despite their losing record.
In August alone more than 80,000 fans came out to the park.
“The salute to Goose Gossage was one of my personal favorites. We had over 7000, I think 7500 fans out here for that one," said Ensor.
But what is it that has made this years season so much more appealing?
“We've had Huston Street, We've had Eric Young Jr. We've had Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta,” said Ensor.
It could be the big name stars, or maybe it's the good deal?
“The average family of four will come out and spend roughly $50 to $54 to enjoy a game of baseball, and to get to do it a beautiful clean facility and a place that they call home,” said Ensor.
But whatever it is, a night at the ballpark is sure to put a smile on the face of every fan.
“That’s the goal every year to provide an entertainment experience that people wont forget,” said Ensor.
And although the season is coming to an end, the team is already looking forward to next year and setting a new attendance record.
“You never want to see the boys of summer leave but you know what it wont be long before they're coming back,” said Ensor.
The Sox will finish their season at home Monday afternoon against the Sacramento River Cats.
