Looking to get away this holiday weekend but didn't reserve a campsite?  You can still enjoy the great outdoors this Labor Day.

Since all the state park campgrounds are booked, and it's too late to reserve with the U.S. Forest Service, your best bet is to look at private campgrounds.  Arrowhead Point Resort in Buena Vista still has a few sites available, but they're going fast.

"It's been a busy season despite the economy," resort owner Kathy Harvick said.  "We have a few sites available for tents and RV's but all our cabins and cottages are full, and I think this will be our last hurrah."

They're planning a bunch of family-friendly events over the weekend.

This will be Maureen Levy's second Labor Day weekend at Arrowhead Point.  She comes to Colorado to get out of the Las Vegas heat.

"This place is the best, we really love it," Levy said. "I love the scenery and it's so beautiful, it's even beautiful when it rains."

The Linvilles traveled from Indiana to stay at Arrowhead Point.  They planned their trip to avoid the Labor Day crunch.

"It's been nice and quiet, that's part of the reason we tried to beat the Labor Day crowds and get out before the actual holiday," Paul Linville said.

Another option is to go completely rustic and camp in the National Forest.  Just make sure it's forestland and not private property.   Fires are allowed but the Forest Service is reminding campers to build them in a proper ring, never leave them unattended and make sure they're completely out before you leave.

"You can park your car no more than one car length from the road and pack in as far as you'd like," Barb Timock of the Forest Service says.  "Just make sure to pack out your trash, and never leave food out if you're in bear country."

There are some campgrounds that have sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Timock recommends figuring out what area you're interested in visiting, then calling the Forest Service's district office in that part of the state to find out more about those.
