COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Story:

Two bear cubs invade a Colorado Springs home Tuesday morning while their mom waits outside.

It happened at a home off West Woodman Road.

The house is nestled back in the woods in an area officials say is a perfect place for bears to call home.

But this time they got a little too close for the homeowner's comfort.

Richard Hall heard noises coming from his kitchen and thought it was his two cats. When he went upstairs to investigate instead of two cats, he found two bear cubs.

“They were up on the kitchen counter eyeing my fruit that I have set up on a shelf there,” said Hall.

He says when the bears saw him they tried to get out of the house to where their mother was waiting.

“Eventually they found a window and they pushed out the screen and climbed up over the windowsill,” said Hall.

The Sheriff’s office and the Division of Wildlife (DOW) were called out to search for the family of bears.

"Typically when a bear does that kind of behavior its apt to repeat it again. So they pose a greater threat to public safety,” said Michael Seraphin, Public Information Officer for the DOW.

The three bears were found up a tree nearby, not far from another home.

“As you look around, this is great bear habitat. Lots of scrub oak, lot of open space between the homes, plenty of hiding places,” said Seraphin.

The DOW tranquilized the bears but the mama bear got stuck. One of the officers had to climb up the tree and push the mama bear loose.

Seraphin says as winter approaches bears will spend up to 20 hours a day eating.

“Bears are attempting to gain as much weight as possible before they go into hibernation,” said Seraphin.

But their brazen behavior when it comes to searching for food can pose a real threat.

"I'm very lucky, and my wife is going to tell me how lucky I am when she gets back,” said Hall.

The DOW says because of the likelihood of the bears breaking into another home they were deemed dangerous and had to be put down.
