COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Heath Townsend, athletic trainer for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, has been named the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) Athletic Trainer of the Year for the Pacific Coast League, the league announced Thursday.
As described by PBATS, the mission of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society is to serve as an educational resource for the Major League and Minor League Baseball athletic trainers. PBATS serves its members by providing for the continued education of the athletic trainer as it relates to the profession, helping improve his understanding of sports medicine so as to better promote the health of his constituency – professional baseball players.
During the 2010 season Townsend has worked with several big league players on rehabilitation assignments, including Troy Tulowitzki, Eric Young, Jr., Taylor Buchholz, Franklin Morales and Huston Street. He has also aided the recovery of 2009 Texas League Pitcher of the Year Samuel Deduno from an elbow injury.
Townsend joined the Colorado Rockies organization in 2000, winning the South Atlantic League Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2001 with the Asheville Tourists. This is his first honor as a member of the Pacific Coast League, in his fifth season in Colorado Springs.
The University of West Alabama graduate spends his offseasons with his wife and son in Alabama.
