DENVER, COLO. -- Colorado is among the finalists in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" education grants.

The U.S. Department of Education is expected to announce the final round of winners Tuesday in the $3.4 billion funding aimed at rewarding states for school reforms.

Colorado is competing for up to $175 million over four years.

The state lost in the first round of "Race to the Top" funding, placing 14th out a field of 16 finalists.

Just two states were named winners -- Tennessee and Delaware.

The Colorado Board of Education recently approved new academic standards to compete for the federal funding.
