COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Anthony Nkyi is one of 31 doctoral students who graduated from the University of the Rockies Saturday. But, he's got a slightly different story than the other students there.
Nkyi, a priest from Ghana, came to the U.S. to get both his undergraduate degree and his doctorate. He studied and completed his dissertation on relationships between substance abuse, purpose in life, and the loneliness among high school students in Ghana.
"As a priest, it's very important to integrate psychology into my own professional work," he said.
University President Charlita Shelton said Nkyi is an inspiration for his people back in Ghana. Another professor, Dr. Louis Hoffman, said he has gone above and beyond what's expected of a student.
"And what's so impressive about him is that," Shelton said. "So he's completed his doctorate in psychology but he's going to go back to his country to teach his people."
Nkyi has a flight home in September, and he said he's both excited and unexcited to go back. While he's happy to see his family and congregation again, to help teach them, he said he'll miss the opportunities America gives them, later adding he'll be back soon.
