FORT CARSON, COLO. (AP) -- The Army has formally activated a new Special Forces battalion at Fort Carson that will have 400 soldiers.

A ceremony on Thursday marked the official start of the 4th Battalion of the 10th Special Forces Group.

The 10th Special Forces Group has its headquarters at Fort Carson. Three of its battalions, including the new one, are also at Fort Carson. A fourth is stationed in Germany.

Special Forces often operate in small teams in what the military calls "unconventional warfare." They're also trained in other operations including reconnaissance, search and rescue missions and humanitarian aid.

The largest unit at Fort Carson is the 4th Infantry Division, which has four brigades with 3,000 to 3,800 soldiers each.
