DENVER (AP) -- A company's decision to close rather than refurbish a uranium mill in southern Colorado has raised concerns about cleanup of the site and continued monitoring of radon emissions.
State officials say the monitoring will continue and the public will have a chance to weigh in as the Cotter Corp. develops cleanup plans.
Both federal and state agencies oversee the mill, a Superfund site. The business has been idle since 2005, but Cotter had planned to update the facilities and start processing again.
State regulators say Cotter has now decided to shut the mill.
They say Cotter has been dismantling some of the buildings and cleaning up contamination. Regulators are working out the total amount of financial assurance Cotter must provide to make sure the cleanup is covered.
