EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- Two local school districts are among 124 nationwide to win grants to improve the quality of teaching of American History in schools.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded Colorado Springs School District 11 and El Paso County School District 8 the Teaching American History grant, which aims to help teachers through professional development, study trips to historic sites and mentoring with professional historians and experts.
District 11 received $999,154, and District 8 received $995,116.
History is one of the core academic subjects under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Department of Education funds the grants for three years. The department gave grants to districts in 40 states, Washington D.C. and American Samoa.
