COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- A fire damaged part of a home Sunday evening, displacing a family of six.
The fire started around 5:30 at a home in the 1300 block of North Circle Dr. Fire officials said when they arrived they found smoke coming out of the house. They made entrance and were able to put out the fire in about 20 minutes.
One adult and four children were in the house at the time of the fire, but all were able to get out unharmed and are now being helped out by the red cross.
Officials are calling the fire accidental, saying it originated from storage too close to a gas-fired water heater in a closet. They estimate the damage at $30,000.
"This particular home did have working smoke detectors, and so that did help to alert the remainder of the occupants in the house that there was a fire present," Lt. Kriss Soppe said. "So we certainly like to reiterate the importance of smoke detectors in the home."
