COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Heavy rain every afternoon is making it tough for crews who work outdoors.
People who work in jobs like roofing or construction depend on good weather to get the job done.
But recent weather has kept many crews from getting in a full days work.
And companies are juggling schedules to keep their people busy.
We spoke to GNR roofing.
They have crews in Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Denver.
In recent days they have had to play monsoon musical chairs with their crews so they have people in the right spot when the rain stops.
It’s been a daily theme in southern Colorado recently; dark clouds coming over the mountains in the afternoon.
But the heavy rain has been especially problematic for people who work outdoors like roofers.
"When the weather does come in like we are getting today you've got to be able to seal that roof up before you leave you cant leave an open roof or you are just going to have more problems than you want," said Romi Lucas of GNR Roofing.
And of course there is the safety of the workers to consider.
"We have a strict policy you are off the roof before the lightning starts," Lucas said.
But there is also economics involved if the crews aren’t working the company isn’t making money and customers aren’t happy.
"It really messes with the schedule first of all because you are always trying to keep your promises and commitments to customers," Lucas said.
So companies have to get creative to keep employees busy and the company financially fit.
"You might work the morning in one area of Colorado Springs and finish up in the afternoon on another roof just to make sure you are getting maximum efficiency out of your crews," Lucas said.
And even though doing business this way is more complicated...
It doesn’t really cost the company more.
"We pay our crews based on the roof so they are paid for doing a roof so as long as they are busy that’s how you hang onto your crews," Lucas said.
Some roofing crews will start working at the break of dawn to try and finish before the rain starts...
But Lucas says they try not to do it that way because it is usually too inconvenient for the customer.
