FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Larimer County health officials say they have confirmed the first cases of West Nile-infected mosquitoes in the county this season.

The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday the mosquitoes were found in traps last week.

Officials say the numbers of culex mosquitoes, the type that carries the virus, are increasing rapidly in Larimer County.

Health officials say six humans are known to have contracted West Nile this year.

Humans can get the virus from mosquito bites. The virus can cause anything from mild illness to chronic disability or death.
