DENVER, COLO. -- A Denver City Council member wants to add a 6 percent sales tax on medical marijuana to pay for youth programs.

Councilman Doug Linkhart says the tax would be on top of the current 7.72 percent sales tax collected in the city.

It would raise an estimated $4.24 million a year.

Linkhart says indigent people wouldn't have to pay.

It would expire after 10 years.

Linkhart wants the City Council to put the proposal on the November ballot.

Other council members are expressing interest but say they have reservations about taxing the growing medical marijuana industry

and creating new programs when the city may have to cut key services because of budget problems.
