DENVER, COLO. -- Sen. Mark Udall wants the federal government to do more to prevent wildfires.

The Democratic senator planned an announcement Wednesday to talk about his efforts to get more federal assistance in fighting fires.

Udall says the federal government should do more to prevent the spread of bark beetles, which have devastated evergreens across much of Colorado.

The infestation leaves forests full of dry, dead wood.

The wildfire question comes as the summer wildfire season heats up.

Last week, firefighters battled at least four Colorado blazes, including two in national parks. No one was hurt.

Udall says he plans to step up calls for more federal funding to manage bark beetles, or clear forests where the pests have already invaded.
