COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Colorado Springs police say a man who was shot and killed by an officer on Friday had pointed a gun at the officer.

Authorities identified the man as 27-year-old Gregory Burns of Colorado Springs.

The officer wasn't injured, but police spokesman Sgt. Steve Noblitt declined to say whether Burns fired the weapon.

The officer was placed on administrative leave with pay while the district attorney investigates. His name wasn't released.

Police say they were trying to contact Burns when he fled, and the confrontation with the officer followed. Police haven't said why they wanted to contact Burns.

The Gazette reports Burns served a prison term for drug conviction and was twice accused of parole violations.
