DENVER (AP) -- A University of Colorado dental school professor who was awaiting approval for a state dental license has resigned.

CU spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery says Randal James submitted his resignation in May. She said she could not provide details.

James' office said he was on vacation and unreachable for comment Thursday.

An exception in state law had allowed James to treat patients and supervise students at a university clinic with an inactive license, but the exception expired in August. The Denver Post found James still was treating patients after the change.

The newspaper also reports that his students sometimes wrote prescriptions using the drug credentials of faculty members who hadn't seen the students' patients.
