GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- Federal officials have announced the opening of an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement office that has long been the subject of controversy in Greeley.
The office has been operational for a month, but officials held a ceremony Wednesday to announce it to the public.
Immigration advocates have opposed the office since it was proposed more than four years ago, saying it would increase racial tensions and lead to profiling in a city that is one-third Hispanic.
Denver ICE Special Agent in Charge Kumar Kibble says people should not expect a "drastic increase" in immigration enforcement activities. He says that is only half of what ICE does. It also investigates terrorism, human smuggling and the importing of illegal pharmaceuticals.
