COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A handful of dogs are safe in Colorado after being rescued from the floodwaters in Tennessee.
The dogs were brought to Colorado by the National Mill Dog Rescue.
All had been abandoned or lost during the recent floods in Nashville.
Officials said some of them were in poor condition, suffering from ticks and low body weight.
"We like to try and help where we can, and obviously we love dogs here, so we saw the need and we felt like it was necessary to help them out," Volunteer Dee Ruppert said.
In total The National Mill Dog Rescue brought six dogs back from Tennessee.
Ruppert said the dogs are lucky to be getting a second chance at life.
"The dogs we brought back were scheduled to be euthanized the day we picked them up, the shelters are so full they are having to euthanize a lot of the stray dogs," Ruppert said.
If all goes well and the dogs pass their physical examinations, Ruppert said they will be adopted out.
But she added the process is not always an easy one.
"If people are interested in the dogs they have to go through a home check process, then they go through the application process and we match the people with the dog that is the best fit," Ruppert said.
For now though Ruppert said the dogs will be kept at the rescue while they adjust to their new life in Colorado.
