COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- They say that love is blind, but that is not a good thing when it comes to the financial side of marriage.
Money coach Bill Stanley was on the FOX21 Morning News Tuesday with some advice for couples thinking of tying the knot.
"Long before the wedding day our couple must have 'the money talk'," says Stanley. "Everything financial must be on the table for discussion. No money secrets before a marriage."
Here are some red flags to watch for during the talk:
* Bankruptcy in the past with no plans to pay the money back.
* Combined credit score of less than 1400.
* Combined total of more than four credit cards.
* Combined emergency fund of less than $4000.
"Each party should have eyes wide open when it comes to the spending habits of the potential partner," says Stanley. "When you get married, you want to acquire a loving and responsible mate. You do not want to be acquiring a pile of debt."
