COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- When a couple decides to divorce it can be extremely hard on the children.
How can parents help them deal with the fact that they are splitting up?
Laura Schaelling from the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region was on the FOX21 Morning News Monday with some advice.
She recommends telling children as much as appropriately possible.
"Consider their age and maturity," says Schaelling, "And decide ahead of time how much you are going to tell them about the reasons for the divorce without speaking negatively about your ex[-spouse]."
Some of the things you as a parent should discuss with your children include:
* When the separation will take place
* Where everyone will be living
* Telephone communication
* How things will change
* Remind children that they have done nothing wrong and that both parents love them very much
